With an announcement that pairs generosity with a firm ultimatum, Washington has committed $2 billion to support United Nations humanitarian operations. However, this funding came with a blunt warning for the global organization: it must "evolve or perish."

A Major Pledge During Broader Budget Reductions

This commitment came against a backdrop of major reductions in US support of global aid. Further cuts are expected from other key donors including Britain and Germany. The official, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, made the statement together with the United Nations' top humanitarian official.

"This contribution will help save countless lives," said the UN's relief coordinator. However, this sum is only a fraction of America's historical spending, which previously totaled around $17 billion in the recent past.

Funding with Strings Attached

The latest US aid comes with without restrictions. The money is focused on only seventeen countries, including Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Crucially, Yemen and Afghanistan have been excluded.
